A 1949 humpback song, misfiled as “fish noises”
What happened
Woods Hole archivists digitized old Gray Audograph discs and found a humpback whale song from March 7, 1949 near Bermuda — likely the oldest preserved whale recording we know, about 20 years before Roger Payne’s famous tapes. The scientists didn’t know what they were hearing. They kept the discs anyway.
Why it lifts
Somebody saved a weird recording instead of tossing it — and decades later we get to hear a whale from 1949.
